How fast is the best marathon runner on earth running a marathon, and for how long would I be able to keep up with him at that pace? That is what I will be finding out today.

Elliot gibshog is the greatest marathon runner of all time.

Back in 2019 he became the first human in history to run the legendary marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers in under two hours.

He did it with alternating pacers and not in a race.

So the record is not an official world record, but he still ran 26.2 miles under two hours, and that is just insane to start.

To put it a bit into perspective.

5K is a distance.

Many of us can relate to and an average recreation runner will finish.

Uh 5k in about 30 minutes and when elliot kip shogi runs a sub two-hour marathon.

He has a 5k split time of 40 minutes and 13 seconds.

I mean if you can run one 5k in 40 minutes and 13 seconds.

I would say that you're a really good runner in the shape I am today.

I can maybe do a 5k in about 15 30.

So I could for sure not follow him for five kilometers, but that begs the question for how long could I keep up with him on a marathon race? So in order to further understand the insane level he's at, I thought it would be very interesting to test this to make it easier to keep a consistent face.

I must try to hang on for my dear life.

I will do this on the treadmill.

When kip sugar ran his sub two hour marathon in vienna, he did it in one hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds, which gives an average speed of 21.2 kilometers per hour.

It's a bit easier running on the treadmill compared to running outside, because you have zero wind resistance so to adjust a bit for that.

I will be running at 21.5 kilometers per hour, but before I turn up the speed to almost the maximum speed of this treadmill, I will of course need a decent warm-up to get my legs ready for this pretty brutal challenge.

Okay, warm I've done and I'm starting to get a bit nervous, because I know this will be brutally tough, because I will do my very best to stay on that treadmill for as long as physically possible, and I have a goal to stay there for at least six minutes, which I think will be possible, but it will be super hard, but yeah, I'm just curious to see for how long I could follow uh kim show again.

It would be really cool to say that I can follow, keep shooting for at least six minutes during a marathon.

Before I start my attempt, I will change into this used the nike alpha vice when kip short did his sub to our marathon.

He did it in a prototype of this use, and this use has a really stiff carbon plate inside of them, and it also has this midsole material that is really soft and bouncy, and these things together should give you a really good energy returns, simply meaning that you should be able to run a little bit faster in these shoes.

So at least I will get the help of these super shoes, but even with these shoes, I will have no chance whatsoever to stay on that treadmill for two hours, but it should help probably help me stay a couple seconds longer at least okay 21.5 kilometers per hour.

Okay.

Let's do this thing starting this test.

I had hoped that at least for a little while I would find the pace comfortable, so I don't have to struggle already in the first minute and I was actually positively surprised by how good I felt so.

I just tried running in a relaxed manner and thought that staying on the treadmill for six minutes for sure should be possible.

While I'm closing in on the three minute mark here, I thought I would talk a bit about how the marathon world records have progressed over the years in 1908.

It was two hours 55 minutes and 18 seconds, and that I actually think that I could have beat them today, but already in the 1950s, the time started getting good 1956.

The world record was 2 hours, 17 minutes and 39 seconds in the early 2000s.

The times were getting closer to that 2 hour, mark with a world record of 2 hour, 4 minutes and 55 seconds, and the current official world record that kip shogi ran with no alternating pacers was set in berlin in 2018 and is 2 hour, 1 minutes and 39 seconds.

My legs are for sure starting to hurt, but up to this point it was actually feeling quite okay.

That makes me think of how long kip shogi feels good when he runs a marathon close to two hours.

Most probably, he feels quite relaxed and good for at least the first half hour, and that must be such a cool feeling to be running at this place, feeling good for so long here.

I am very happy to reach that five minute mark getting closer to the goal of six minutes, but I actually feel that I have some more minutes in me at this point.

Six minutes done and although it's painful I'm feeling way better than I had anticipated, so my new goal is to get to the 10 minute mark, but that is going to be tough because, as you can see, I'm starting to feel the pace pretty bad.

I keep fighting and I'm very happy to reach the eight minute mark, and although it's really painful by this part now I can feel that the 10 minute mark is getting closer and I really want to get that done.

I must say that this is going way better than expected and most probably my treadmill is giving me a bit bigger advantage compared to running outdoors than just 0.3 kilometers per hour.

I adjusted with, because I'm pretty sure that I would not be able to keep this pace for this long outside.

As you can see from this point, it is pure pain.

This is me, after nine and a half minutes at this pace.

Let's compare it to how kipchoge was looking after two hours at this pace.

He doesn't even seem to hurt that man is such an incredible athlete there.
