2024 Toyota Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Toyota Tacoma: Twinsies, Kinda? (2023)

One’s an SUV and one’s a truck. But don’t be fooled—these new Toyotas share lots of DNA.

Ready or not, Toyota has a bunch of big changes up its proverbial sleeve for 2024, including the introduction of a back-from-the-dead Land Cruiser (Toyota's longest-running nameplate) and a (finally) fully redesigned Tacoma. Obviously, these off-roaders don't play in the same automotive class—the Land Cruiser being an SUV and the Tacoma classified as a midsize truck—but they still share more than a Toyota badge: platform, engine, tech, off-road features, and more. See what else binds this unlikely duo in our 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Toyota Tacoma specs comparison.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Toyota Tacoma: Twinsies, Kinda? (1)

2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Platform

After the demise of our shore's 200 series Land Cruiser a few years ago (that returned globally as the 300 series to other markets worldwide), a brand new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser returns to our shores as a two-row, five-seater SUV that's 4.4 inches narrower and 1.2 inches shorter than the outgoing 200 series. And no, it does not replace the U.S.-based 4Runner.

Likewise, a new fourth-generation 2024 Tacoma replaces the outdated third-gen that originally debuted for the 2016 model year.

The Land Cruiser and Tacoma both utilize the TNGA-F (Toyota New Global Architecture F-series) body-on-frame global truck/SUV platform, shared with the new Tundra and Sequoia.

2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Trims

Initial Land Cruiser trims include the First Edition (limited to 5,000 units), 1958, and Land Cruiser. Interestingly, First Edition and 1958 trims get rounded headlights, while the Land Cruiser trim gets rectangular headlights.

The two- or five-passenger midsize 2024 Tacoma truck comes as a two-door (XtraCab) with a six-foot bed or as a four-door (Double Cab) with a five- or six-foot bed. There are eight trims: SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro.d

2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Engines

The Land Cruiser is powered by one hybrid powertrain—Toyota's new i-Force Max 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and 48-hp electric motor combo that make a combined 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. It's backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Tacoma gets this same hybrid i-Force Max mated to an eight-speed automatic on upper trims, but leading up to that premium hybrid are three other combos: base 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder with 228 hp/243 lb-ft (eight-speed auto; SR only) and i-Force 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder with 270 hp/310 lb-ft (six-speed manual) or 278 hp/317 lb-ft (eight-speed auto). That's right: You can get a manual Tacoma.

2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Drivetrain

The Land Cruiser has a standard full-time four-wheel-drive system with an electronically controlled two-speed high/low transfer case and an automatic limited-slip differential. A standard electronic rear locking differential splits power 50/50, and there's a center diff lock.

The Tacoma comes in both two- and four-wheel drive. The two-wheel drive has an automatic limited-slip differential (with a rear e-locker available); the four-wheel drive has an electronically controlled two-speed high/low transfer case, active traction control, and an automatic limited-slip differential. Off-road oriented grades—including TRD PreRunner, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter—get a standard electronic locking rear differential. Limited models with the hybrid powertrain boast a Torsen-style full-time four-wheel drive system with a a two-speed transfer case and center differential lock.

2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Suspension

The Land Cruiser is underpinned by a control-arm front suspension with twin-tube shocks and a coil-sprung multilink rear suspension.

Although rear leaf springs remain standard on the Tacoma SR, SR5 XtraCab, and the TRD PreRunner, an available new multi-link rear suspension swaps the leaves for a set of coils. Shock options abound depending on trim: twin-tube, TRD sport-tuned twin-tube, Bilstein monotubes, Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), 2.5-inch Fox, and 2.5-inch Old Man Emu.

2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Off-Road Tech and Gear

The Land Cruiser and Tacoma can be optioned with Multi-Terrain Select (which offers multiple drive modes); crawl and downhill assist control; Multi-Terrain Monitor (which offers multiple views thanks to cameras around the vehicle), and a front stabilizer bar disconnect.

The Land Cruiser First Edition gets a unique front skid plate, roof rack, and rock rails.

The Tacoma also gets Multi-Terrain Select, upgraded to allow you touse it on the fly without having to shift the truck into 4-Low.

The Tacoma Trailhunter gets hot stamped steel skid plates, high-mount air intake, rock rails, ARB steel rear bumper with red rear recovery hooks, bed utility bar, Rigid LED fog lamps, and an integrated air compressor in the bed. The TRD Pro gets fancy IsoDynamic Performance seats.

All Land Cruiser come with 18-inch alloy wheels as standard equipment with optional 20s. First Edition and Land Cruiser trims are fitted with a 265/70R18 tire, while the 1958 base trim gets a slightly smaller 245/70R18 size.

The Tacoma, now with four-wheel disc brakes, gets 17- or 18-inch wheels, with 33-inch 265/70R18 Goodyear Territory R/T tires available.

2024 Land Cruiser vs. 2024 Tacoma: Key Differences
